A Super Easy Pregnancy (And Beyond) Skincare Routine

I’ve never had a consistent skincare routine.

The most I did to my face was wash it with anti-bacterial soap and a washcloth. Because I wasn’t plagued with acne during my teenage years, my skin wasn’t something that I fixated on, so I always did the bare minimum.   I had a random acne flare up during my final year of undergrad and I got Proactiv to clear it up. And since then, my skin had been quite uneventful.

That is, until late last year when I got pregnant and my skin started to go crazy! I had pimples on my cheeks and small zits that resembled heat rash all over my forehead. Not to mention melasma a.k.a. “the mask of pregnancy” which cause discoloration on my forehead, neck and armpits.

Before attempting any routine, I asked my OB for general information and what she recommend that I do. She assured me that these were textbook pregnancy symptoms, especially during the first trimester. And also, she relayed that there was virtually nothing I could really do about it besides wait it out since it was my hormones that were causing all of these changes.

However, my OB and nurse did say that I could look into getting an over the counter oil free wash with some salycilic acid. I went home and looked up pregnancy safe cleansers and found so much conflicting information —Dr. Google is a blessing and a curse sometimes. I became fixated on all ingredients to see what was safe for me and baby, but in the end, I relied on my OB’s advice and I found a cleanser that I knew several people used, Neutrogena.

I determined that I just needed to get a few items that would enable me to have an easy routine since I never had a routine before. I bought a cleanser, a moisturizer,  something natural to deal with my melasma and a body oil to combat any extra stretch marks. Without further ado, here is my simple and basic routine that I use to this day:

Pregnancy Skincare (& Beyond) Skincare Routine
  1. I wash my face with Neutrogena oil-free acne wash cleanser.
  2. I apply Drunk Elephant’s Vitamin C serum to any areas with skin discoloration and allow the serum to dry (pseudo pro tip, I purchased the small sample size pack to test this serum out before paying full price).
  3. I follow up with my favorite moisturizer ever, Clinique’s 72 hour Moisture Surge

THAT’S ALL!

And during pregnancy, I would apply Bio-Oil to my belly and existing stretch mark areas. I did not get any additional stretch marks from pregnancy and I can’t say that I attribute that to Bio-Oil because I have a good amount of stretch marks already from my weight loss. I’m not sure my body needed to make more haha, but I will say I did not get any on my belly.

I’m happy to report that this simple routine has not only turned my skin around (with the help of my body adjusting to hormones too), but it has also cured issues I had prior too pregnancy. I notice a lot less oil on my t-zone areas, which was my biggest issue, and my skin tone has become more even because there was slight discoloration even before I got plagued with melasma.

Your turn! Do you have a skincare routine and if so, what are your go to products? Have you used any of the products or brands that I’ve mentioned here? Share in the comments! Happy Friday y’all!.
